Obama votes early in presidential election

Barack Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to vote early, casting his ballot in his hometown of Chicago on Thursday morning.

Voting is already under way in some form across many states.

It is estimated that around a third of all voters could cast their ballots before the November 6 election.

Polling data suggests the Democratic incumbent has already built up an edge over Republican opponent Mitt Romney among early voters.

Early voting formed a large part of Obama's success in the 2008 election. Nearly a quarter of the 133 million people who voted that year had cast their ballots before Election Day.

According to previous polls, Democratic voters across several battleground states are more likely than Republicans to vote ahead of time.
