2016 Presidential Election

US Election Updates - November 3, 2012

Obama leads in key states, says poll

President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are tied on a national level but the Democratic incumbent holds a marginal lead in three of the most hotly contested states in Tuesday's election, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday.

Obama leads Romney among likely voters by a margin of 3 percentage points in Virginia and 2 percentage points in Ohio and Florida.

The two candidates are tied in Colorado.

Nationwide, they are tied at 46 percent each. Neither has held a clear lead since early October.

Political pundits believe the national poll may hold less relevance as Election Day draws nearer because the outcome will be down to the eight or nine states that remain competitive.

Collectively, the state polls show that Obama holds a slight advantage in the state-by-state battle to secure the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.
