Obama leads amongst early voters, says poll

President Barack Obama leads Republican rival Mitt Romney by 59 percent to 31 percent among early voters, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling data compiled over recent weeks.

The sample size of early voters is relatively small but the Democratic incumbent’s margin is still well above the poll's credibility interval of 10 percentage points.

With just over three weeks until the November 6 election, 7 percent of those surveyed said they had already voted either in person or by mail.

Voting is already under way in some form in at least 40 states.

Both the Obama and Romney teams are urging supporters to vote as soon as possible.

Early voting formed a large part of Obama's success in the 2008 election. Nearly a quarter of the 133 million people who voted that year had cast their ballots before Election Day.

According to previous polls, Democratic voters across several swing states are more likely than Republicans to vote ahead of time.
