Obama jokes with Hawaiian-born boy over birth certificate

President Barack Obama made a humorous reference to the controversy over his birth certificate on Saturday at a restaurant in Florida where he met a young boy who, like himself, was born in Hawaii.

Last year, Obama released a long-form copy of his birth certificate in a bid to silence false speculation that he was born abroad, meaning he would be constitutionally ineligible to be president.

During a campaign stop at a Florida sports bar and grill, Obama spoke to a group of children. When told that one of the youngsters, Andre Wupperman, was born in Hawaii, Obama smiled and asked: "Do you have a birth certificate?" Obama asked the boy, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961 to a Kenyan father and mother from Kansas.

Prior to the release of the long-form birth certificate, conspiracy theorists said the "Certificate of Live Birth" released during the 2008 presidential campaign was inconclusive and that Obama was born in Kenya.
