2016 Presidential Election

US Election Updates - October 16, 2012

Michelle Obama votes early by mail

First Lady Michelle Obama told supporters in Ohio on Monday that she voted by absentee ballot.

Unsurprisingly, she said she had voted for her husband, Democratic incumbent Barack Obama.

The First Lady also tweeted a picture of the ballot before mailing it to her home state of Illinois.

The move comes are part of an effort by the Obama campaign to promote early voting.

Obama plans to discuss early voting in Ohio and Iowa on Wednesday.

He is expected to cast his vote early on October 25 at a polling center in Illinois, the first time a presidential candidate will not vote in person on Election Day.

Voting is already under way in some form in 43 states.

It is estimated that around a third of all voters could cast their ballots before November 6.

Early voting formed a large part of Obama's success in the 2008 election. Nearly a quarter of the 133 million people who voted that year had cast their ballots before Election Day.

According to previous polls, Democratic voters across several crucial battleground states are more likely than Republicans to vote ahead of time.
