2016 Presidential Election

US Election Updates - October 21, 2012

McCain voters defecting to Obama

A new poll has found around five percent of voters who voted for Republican contender John McCain in 2008, will switch to Democratic President Barack Obama in 2012.

This figure peaked to around 9 percent on two separate occasions over the summer, according to data from a Reuters/Ipsos poll collected since January.

The McCain-to-Obama switchers are 55 percent male, with 34 percent of them aged 55 and above. About 72 percent of them are white

They are mainly from the East Coast and nearly 4 in 10 live in the mid- or South Atlantic. Around 3 in 10 finished their education after high school, while nearly 2 in 10 have a bachelor's degree.

Overall, Obama trails Romney 34 percent to 52 percent among white men over 50.

The defectors to the incumbent are a smaller group of respondents than those who voted for him in 2008 and now support Romney.

The Reuters/Ipsos polling indicate 10 percent of voters plan to switch to Romney.
