Jobs reports may help Obama in tight race

A positive October jobs report may give President Barack Obama a last minute campaign boost and deny his Republican challenger Mitt Romney the chance to hit home his argument that the Democratic incumbenet has failed to turn around the economy.

The U.S. economy added 171,000 new jobs last month, higher than the figure predicted.

According to the figures released by the Labor Department on Friday, the unemployment rate rose marginally to 7.9 percent as more workers resumed looking for jobs.

Only people who are currently looking for a job count as unemployed.

Friday’s figures were more modest than the September report that saw the unemployment rate drop to 7.8 percent from 8.1 percent, the lowest since 2009.

Unemployment is one of the key issues ahead of Tuesday's presidential election.

The figures were the last major piece of economic data to be released before Election Day.
