Hillary Clinton headed on trans-Asia trip during Democratic Convention

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be overseas when the Democratic National Convention takes place next week.

Clinton departs the United States on Thursday and is scheduled to hold meetings and talks with officials in the Cook Islands, China, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Brunei and the Russian city of Vladivostok.

In April, the State Department announced that Clinton would not be attending the Democratic National Convention, which kicks off next week in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"As secretary of State, she is no longer engaged in retail politics, but she remains a keen observer," former State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told Reuters. "I'm pretty sure she'll be closely monitoring what happens there. She has good sources, one in particular, who will be in a good position to tell her what happened."

However, her husband, former President Bill Clinton, will be present and officially nominate President Barack Obama.

According to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, it is "tradition" for the current Secretary of State to miss political conventions.

Hillary Clinton plans to step down from her post as the head of the State Department at the end of Obama's first term. She has dismissed reports of seeking to further her political ambitions.
