Saqqara is a huge, old burial ground in Egypt, featuring the ancient standing step pyramid. It is situated around 30 km south of the modern Cairo and covers an approximate area of 7 km by 1.5 km. Although it was overshadowed as the burial ground of royalty by Giza and afterwards by the Valley of the Thebes Kings, it remained a major complex for burials and rituals for over 3,000 years.

The step pyramid at Saqqara was established by Imhotep for King Djoser. It is basically the ancient hewn-stone building that has a major historical significanse. It also houses the newly opened Imhotep Museum. During the 3rd Dynasty, it was constructed for King Djoser and was supervised by his vizier Imhotep. Besides that, there are tombs of different periods spread all over Saqqara. On the northern-most region of Saqqara, there are pyramids belonging to the 6th Dynasty pharaoh Teti, adjacent of which are the mastabas located. The other remarkable archaeological sites include the Serapeum.
