Tena City Map

Tena, an attractive Ecuador tourist Destination, is the capital of Napo Province of Ecuador Amazon. Tena is the characteristic South American Jungle Town.

It is a commercial centre and has a population of 13000. Tena is the launching point for enthusiasts interested in jungle tours, rafting or kayaking.

Tena is inhabited by the Quichua Indians, Quijos, and Chibchas. They have a typical jungle life-style. Tourists can take part in the traditional customs of these local inhabitants. Dancing, blowgun competitions, and preparation of 'chicha' (an alcoholic drink made from fermenting the juice of rice, maize, or yuca) are some of the popular customs which can be enjoyed by travelers to Tena.

Tena is a rain forest city. Though it is situated near the equator it is not hot and humid. The climate here is comfortable. This is due to the city's elevation. It rains here throughout the year, the heaviest during June - August. The rain in Tena is pleasant and warm.

Tena is a five hour southeastwards journey from Quito. The roads in Tena are unpaved and are subject to regular landslides particularly during heavy rains. There are regular bus services connecting Tena to Quito. Tickets should preferably be booked in advance since the buses get crowded particularly in weekends. Small white truck-taxis also ply in this area. Tourists should bargain with these taxis before beginning the ride.

There is also a small airport in Tena which cater to small flights over the surrounding jungles.
