Viborg derives its name from the combination of two words, 'Wii' symbolizing a holy place and 'berg' referring to a hill. During the Middle Ages, Viborg was a significant place in terms of political and religious matters. Before the Protestant Reformation, Viborg was the home to five monasteries, about 12 parish churches, many chapels and the Cathedral.
The climate of Viborg is mostly of a temperate kind with temperatures ranging up to 85ºF during the month of July. The area receives a substantial amount of rainfall during the rainy season.
Viborg is the home to a number of educational institutions, including the oldest institution of Denmark, Viborg Kathedralskole, which celebrated its 900 th birthday in 2000. The current monumental home was built in 1926 to accommodate a large number of students. Later on a dorm was added to the school to house many students from nearby islands and it still performs this role.
Viborg has earned a great reputation for being one of Denmark's leading cities in the field of sports. The women handball team was the first sports team of the region and thereafter the men's handball team also came into prominence. The soccer team of Viborg had won the Danish Cup in 2000.
Viborg has a twin city in each of the Nordic countries and also in other regions of the world. Viborg Cathedral is the greatest tourist attraction spot of the region. Other attractions include Skovgaard Museum and Viborg Siftsmuseum.
