Ribe is the oldest town of Denmark, situated on the southwestern part of Jutland. It is now a part of the newly formed Esbjerg Municipality. Earlier it was the seat of both the surrounding municipality and County.

Ribe has long been the educational center of the region. The Ribe Kathedralskole is one of the oldest institutions dating back to 1145. It is more than 850 years and is the oldest existing school in Scandinavia. Other educational institutions of the region include The State College of Education in Ribe, Ribe Business College and VUC.
Ribe generally enjoys a very cool climate with temperatures ranging between 20º-25ºC during the months of July and August. The area receives a substantial amount of rainfall of about 12 inches during the months of September and October.
