Soli City Map

A Greek city that is located in the northern coast of the island, Soli, Cyprus is one of the oldest cities of the island. It lies on the southern
region of the Morphou Bay and it is believed that the city of Soli was established during the first half of 6th century.

The historical relevance of Soli, Cyprus lies in its role during the war against the Persians. The city faced large scale destruction when Cyprus was invaded by the Arabs in the 7th century. Fertile soils, adequate water supply, a harbor and rich copper reserves made Soli in Cyprus a flourishing city but only till 648 A.D after which began its downfall. Archaeological excavations in Soli reveal several historical relics including a Roman theater with an auditorium, a church with its floor made of colored stones. Quite a large city, Soli has been excavated only partially while a large part of it is yet to be excavated.

Among the ruins of Soli that have been excavated are the basilica (a church), the agora (a shopping center) and the theater. The basilica of Soli is one of the most interesting features of this ancient city. The most significant aspect of the basilica is its mosaics. Made up of various designs and colors, these mosaics form a visually fascinating characteristic of the church.

The Roman Theater, another of the remnants, can accommodate 4000 people and comprises two storeys with marble paneled covering. It has an auditorium with an excellent acoustic system. The Agora constituted a street that was columned on either sides and that led to a Nymphoeum. Being a historical site, Soli serves as a tourist attraction in the present day Cyprus.
