Colon City Map

Colon is a town of Matanzas province. It is a historical site founded in 1828. This destination in Cuba was one of the main urban sites of Cuba in the 19 th century because of its development in the sugar cane industry and activities on port. Today, it is known as Plaza de Colon . The Parish plaza, the old Spanish Casino and the hotels Europa and Dominica surround the place and are well preserved.

The Colon cemetery is named after Christopher Columbus. It is known for its beautiful architecture and above all, for its legend. Colon is also known as the 'City of the Dead ' and it is here that the grave of La Milagrosa, a woman who died at child birth, lies. The legend that follows is that the bereaved husband came to her grave thrice everyday and knocked at the grave to inform his dead wife of his visit. Henceforth, the Cubans revere him as his official saint.

The grave of Milagrosa has become a hot-spot in Cuba destination because of its supposed ability to fulfill wishes. As the custom goes, one should follow the following steps while visiting her grave:
  • Knocking on the grave
  • Saying the name and the wish
  • Laying down flowers
  • Walking away facing the grave without turning.

Colon is a destination where you can find a fine blending of history, culture and legend. So, why miss the chance?
