Since, Bucaramanga possesses a regional network with the oil refineries situated at Barrancabermeja and Cucuta, it has been transformed into one of the major centers of commercial activity. As a matter of fact, the main headquarters of the Colombian Petroleum Institute (ICP) are situated in this city. Apart from it, the bases of Ecopetrol and Colombian Natural Gas Company are also established in Bucaramanga at Colombia.
The Colombian city of Bucaramanga was founded in the year of 1622. It was around the period between 1860 and 1870 that a group of German merchants and adventurers had come to Bucaramanga. Prior to Bucaramanga, the capital of Santander was Sorocco. But in the year of 1886, post the political shake-up; Bucaramanga of Colombia substituted Sorroco as the capital.
Being situated on the plateau in the Cordillera Oriental of the Andes, Bucaramanga also includes Floridablanca, Giron and Piedecuesta. The airport of Bucaramanga is, however, situated in Lebrija. Since, the city of Bucaramanga is located at an altitude of 959 meters from the sea level, the average temperature slightly fluctuates near the 23 degree Centigrade mark. The annual rainfall measures approximately 1,041 millimeters.
Bucaramanga was also known as "Cuidad de los Parques" at some point.
