Yemen faces civil war, protracted conflict: UN envoy
March 23 , 2015
Yemen is on the edge of “civil war”, the UN's special envoy Jamal Benomar has warned.
The conflict in the country could become “protracted” like in Iraq and Syria, he said.
Meanwhile, backing the ousted Yemini president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, the UN Security Council said in a statement that it was strongly committed to Yemen's “unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity”.
The Shia Houthi rebels have consolidated their position in Sanaa after Hadi was forced to flee the capital city last month.
