Yemen: About 1200 inmates escape from Taiz prison
July 1 , 2015
An estimated 1,200 prisoners have escaped from a central Yemen prison.
The escaped inmates are believed to include al-Qaeda suspects, reports say. Clashes were reported at the prison in Taiz town before the break-out.
Conflicting reports have emerged about the circumstances leading to the prison escape. While some reports said that al-Qaeda supporters had attacked the prison, other accounts indicated that the prisoners took advantage of a clash between warring militias.
Yemen is facing a severe crisis as Shia Houthi rebels and various militias fight for control, without any government at the center.
