Xi Jinping Swears in New Hong Kong CEO as City Celebrates 20 Years of Chinese Rule
July 1 , 2017
Hong Kong celebrated twenty years of Chinese rule with President of China Xi Jinping swearing in Carrie Lam as the new Hong Kong Chief Executive. On July 1, 1997, British ruled Hong Kong was handed over to China under a “one country, two systems” framework that guarantees autonomy to the city. While delivering his speech during the ceremony, Xi Jinping warned that any act of using Hong Kong for sabotage or infiltration against the Chinese mainland would be considered as crossing the red line. Clashes took place between the pro-democracy and pro-Beijing demonstrators near the lavish ceremony, followed by several arrests.
