Xi Jinping, Shinzo Abe meet for formal talks
November 10 , 2014
China’s President Xi Jinping and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have met for the first time for formal talks following over two years of simmering tension over a group of islands, according to media reports.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Beijing APEC summit. Abe described the meeting as a first step to improve ties.
Ties have been strained due to a row over the strategically vital islands of Diaoyu in the East China Sea. The Japanese name for the islands, which it controls, is Senkaku.
