World's e-waste touches new high of 41.8mn tonnes
April 19 , 2015
A record amount of e-waste, measuring 41.8 million tonnes, was generated in the world last year, a UN report has said.
Most of the electrical and electronic waste comes from domestic appliances such as fridges and washing machines, the report compiled by the UN University says.
Worryingly, less than one-sixth of the e-waste was recycled in a proper manner.
The total e-waste generated in 2013 was 39.8 million tonnes; going by current trends, by 2018 an estimated 50 million tonnes will be generated, the report says.
