WHO announces Joining of 168 Nations to COVAX and US$1 Billion New Funding for ACT-Accelerator to end COVID-19 Pandemic

  • Director-General of World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has said that 168 countries have now joined COVAX until now. Another 25 countries have assured Tedros to be a part of it soon. He went on to say that this uniting of forces across the world shows that the world is coming together for the sake of all humankind to end this COVID-19 pandemic. In his opening remarks on October 2, 2020, WHO’s Director-General said that the world is witnessing the addition of around 2 million COVID-19 confirmed infection cases and one million deaths every week. He also announced that the ACT-Accelerator has received new funding of US$1 billion, thereby paving the path to the acceleration of diagnostics, treatment, and vaccines. Dr. Tedros has underscored the fact that “with good leadership and quick responsive action from the general population, it’s never too late to turn the tide.”
