White House Condemns Charlottesville Violence Caused by Fringe Groups
August 14 , 2017
After a car rammed into a peaceful rally (killing 1 and injuring 19 others) against right white supremacists in Virginia’s Charlottesville, violent clashes broke out between fringe far rights and counter protesters. A state of emergency was declared. US President Donald Trump condemned “this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides”. However, he was criticized for not being specific in condemning the white supremacists. A White House statement reiterated Trump’s statement but specifically condemned “White Supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi and all extremist groups”. Vice President Mike Pence reportedly condemned the dangerous fringe groups. H.R. McMaster, national security adviser of Trump, called it an act of terrorism.
