Vote Count Falls Short to Change Macedonia's Name

  • There was a vote session to change the name of Macedonia to North Macedonia. However, the vote count in the favor of the case has seriously fallen short of the threshold. Minimum of 50% of the vote was required in the favor when it only received a little over a third of the total vote number. The referendum was aimed to end the dispute with Greece which has been running for long. Greece too has its own region named Macedonia. Greece has agreed that it would end its objection to Nato membership of Macedonia if the changed name gets in effect.
