Verdict due in Pope's butler trial

  • The trial of Pope Benedict's former butler on charges of stealing confidential papers resumed on Saturday at a Vatican court and is due to give a verdict.

Paolo Gabriele was charged with aggravated theft in May after a series of leaks, nicknamed “Vatileaks”, exposed alleged corruption, cronyism and internal conflict within the Holy See.

The 46-year-old already admitted to leaking confidential documents to the Italian media.

If convicted, he could face up to six years in prison. He will likely serve time in an Italian prison due to an agreement between Italy and the Vatican.
