Venezuela Swears in Controversial Constituent Assembly Members
August 5 , 2017
Venezuela swears in 545 elected members of the newly constituted National Constituent Assembly. Former foreign minister Delcy Rodríguez has been named as President of the assembly. Controversy broke out when Smartmatic (which provides technological platform for Venezuelan elections since 2004) reportedly claimed that the number of voters produced by the system differs from the announced figure by “at least one million voters”. Over 40 countries led by USA didn’t recognize the assembly. Vatican also stated that formation of the new assembly has created “a climate of tension and conflict”. China has said that the election in Venezuela were “generally held smoothly” but also noted “reaction from all relevant sides”.
