Venezuela Releases 39 Political Prisoners as a First Step towards Peace

  • Venezuela’s re-elected Maduro-government has started releasing its opposition activists, fulfilling a pre-election promise by President Nicholas Maduro made before the May 20, 2018 Presidential election. Re-elected President Nicolas Maduro has said that release of the 39 political prisoners is the first step towards peace. Reports say the opposition politicians and activists released by the government were earlier arrested in connection with violent Venezuelan protests during 2014-2017, which left over 200 people dead. The full list of political prisoners (published by Supreme Court President Maikel Moreno) includes former mayor of San Cristobal, Daniel Ceballos. President of Constituent Assembly, Delcy Rodriguez, said that The Truth Commission released the political prisoners after President Maduro’s recommendation.
