Venezuela: Opposition leader barred from holding public office for a year
July 15 , 2015
Maria Corina Machado, a key Venezuelan opposition figure, has been barred for a year from public offices, reports say.
The former congresswoman has been given 15 days for appealing against the decision, she says.
It is not clear why she was barred, but she may not be able to stand for congress in the parliamentary polls scheduled for December.
Last year, Machado had led a protest against President Nicolas Maduro’s government.
Daniel Ceballos, another opposition leader, has also been barred from holding public office.
