May 25 , 2015
Leopoldo Lopez, the jailed Venezuelan opposition leader, has gone on a hunger strike and called for a protest rally against the Nicolás Maduro government.
Lopez, 44, was jailed over a year ago for his alleged role in instigating protests against President Maduro. The street protests had led to violence, killing more than 40 people and injuring hundreds.
In a video message posted on social media by his wife, Lopez said he and Daniel Ceballos, another jailed politician, were demanding “freedom of political prisoners.”
