Vatican gives 'legal recognition' to 'State of Palestine'
June 27 , 2015
The Vatican has signed a treaty with the "State of Palestine", hoping that its legal recognition would boost peace with Israel.
The treaty was signed by Paul Gallagher, the Vatican foreign minister, and Riad al-Malki, his Palestinian counterpart.
Gallagher said that he hoped that the recognition by the Vatican acts as a “stimulus” to end the “long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” Al-Malki described the treaty as a "historic” agreement.
Israel and the US are against giving recognition to the the Palestinian state.
