'Uzbekistan has jailed thousands on politically motivated charges'

  • Thousands of people in Uzbekistan have been jailed on charges that are politically motivated, with prisoners subjected to ill-treatment and torture, a new report by Human Rights Watch has said on Friday, September 26.

Those jailed by President Islam Karimov’s government, include journalists, religious figures, and human right campaigners. Their sentences are often extended for years in an arbitrary manner, the report says.

The report is based on interviews with former detainees and prisoners’ relatives, and court documents.
