Utah's ban on gay marriage ruled unconstitutional
December 21 , 2013
Gay marriage has won yet again: A US judge ruled that Utah's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and violates lesbian and gay couples' right to enjoy equal protection.
It's not clear what the immediate effect would be since the state can appeal. There are similar challenges in other states but Utah is paid more attention to because of the state's history of opposition to same-sex marriage.
Three lesbian and gay couples brought the lawsuit and lawyers for Utah argued that the state's law promoted "responsible procreation."
Hawaii and Illinois approved same-sex marriage last month.
