US Warns of Large Consequences if China Continues Militarizing South China Sea Islands

  • The US Defence Secretary James Mattis, during an annual security summit (Shangri-La Dialogue) in Singapore, warned of “large consequences” if China continues deploying missiles in South China Sea islands and continue to turn these islands into military bases. He went on to say that these military manoeuvres in the South China Sea are an attempt by China to intimidate and coerce its neighbours.  James Mattis categorically mentioned that the US will “support China’s choices if they promote long-term peace and prosperity for all in this dynamic region”.  The US Defence Secretary pledged to support Asian allies of the US and protecting maritime borders.
