US, Vietnam take cautious steps towards defense ties

  • The State Department has said that the US will lift some restrictions on defense sales to Vietnam. The announcement came after Secretary of State John Kerry met Pham Binh Minh, the Vietnamese foreign minister.

Kerry, however, stressed that changes in defense ties would be linked to the human rights record of Vietnam. Jen Psaki, the State Department spokesperson, said a lot more needed to be done “in areas like human rights”.
