US: Utah Governor backs measure to resume firing squads for executions
March 24 , 2015
The US state of Utah will resume execution by firing squads for carrying out the death penalty in case drugs for lethal injections are unavailable.
Governor Gary Herbert approved the measure and signed it into law, making Utah the only American state to use firing squads for execution. Herbert’s spokesperson said lethal injection would, however, continue to be the “primary method”.
Utah's prison authorities say they have run out of reserves of drugs needed for lethal injection, an issue also faced by other US states.
