US to close 15 military bases in Europe
January 9 , 2015
Chuck Hagel, the US defence secretary, has confirmed that the US will be closing 15 military bases in Europe, according to media reports.
According to the Pentagon, the closure would save about $500 million a year.
However, the RAF Lakenheath has been named as the first permanent base in Europe for F-35 aircraft.
The American troop count in Europe – exceeding 60,000 – will not change.
Acknowledging that the move to close the bases would lead to some job losses locally, Hagel praised the “tremendous support” provided to the bases over the years.
