US soldier, once held by Taliban, charged with desertion
March 26 , 2015
Bowe Bergdahl, the US soldier who went missing in 2009 from his Afghanistan base, has been charged with misbehavior and desertion, the US army has said.
Sgt Bergdahl was freed after a prisoner swap with the Taliban in May 2014 after spending five years in captivity. The prisoner exchange had, however, triggered a political controversy.
The soldier could face a court-martial and, if found guilty, be sentenced to a life-term. While the desertion charge carries a maximum sentence of five years, the misbehavior charge could lead to a life sentence if convicted.
