US: Senior official resigns after massive data breach
July 11 , 2015
Katherine Archuleta, the head of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), has resigned following an unprecedented data breach in the US affecting over 20 million people.
Department director Archuleta said that she was stepping down so that the OPM can “move beyond” the current challenges.
Senior US officials have publicly named China as the prime suspect in the cyber attack. Beijing denies the claims.
The OPM had initially stated that some four million workers were hit by the breach, but it now believes that personal data of as many as 21.5 million people may have been stolen.
