US resumes military aid to Bahrain; rights groups slam move
June 30 , 2015
The US has announced the resumption of military aid to Bahrain, saying the kingdom had seen “meaningful progress” on the human rights front four years after the Arab nation’s government cracked down on anti-state demonstrators.
In a statement, John Kirby, the US state department spokesperson, said that though Bahrain’s human rights situation was not adequate, the improvements needed to be recognized.
Human rights activists have slammed the US move, calling it a setback to attempts at pressurizing Bahrain to improve its rights records.
