US raid on al-Qaeda accidentally killed two hostages, admits White House
April 24 , 2015
The White House has admitted that two hostages were accidentally killed during a counterterrorism operation earlier this year.
Warren Weinstein, a 72-year-old US development worker, and Giovanni Lo Porto, a 39-year-old Italian aid worker, were in the captivity of al-Qaeda when they were killed in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border area in the January raid.
Describing the two deaths as a painful loss, US president Barack Obama said that he took full responsibility for the raid as commander-in-chief.
