US President Trump unveils Operation Warp Speed for COVID-19 Vaccine, Removes US State Department's Inspector General

  • The US President Donald Trump, during a midday event in the Rose Garden on Friday, unveiled a government coordinated crash effort (named Operation Warp Speed) to secure a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year. While talking about the mega public-private partnership project, Trump said that it is going to be “A massive scientific and industrial, logistic endeavor unlike anything our country has seen since the Manhattan Project.” The project will be led by the former head of pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline’s vaccines division, Moncef Slaoui, and the project’s chief operating officer will be Gen Gustave Perna (who oversees the US Army’s distribution). Moncef Slaoui said that they are confident about delivering a “few hundred million doses of vaccine” by 2020-end. While saying that the US is starting a process, Trump said “vaccine or no vaccine, we're back”. Meanwhile, the US President Donald Trump has fired US State Department inspector general Steve Linick, who was reportedly probing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and also accused Trump of a potentially illegal act of retribution. Senior Democratic lawmakers, including House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, criticized the move. In a letter to Pelosi, Trump said that he is exercising his “power as President to remove from office the Inspector General of the Department of State, effective 30 days from today.”
