US President Trump says New Nuclear Treaty Needed involving both Russia and China
August 3 , 2019
The US President Donald Trump has said that he wants a new nuclear treaty with both Russia and China. The announcement comes after Trump was criticized for withdrawing the US from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty (which banned 500-5,500 km or 310-3,400 mi range missiles) on Friday. The US decision of withdrawing from the INF treaty comes after they accused Russia of violating the treaty through the deployment of a new type of cruise missile (9M729 missiles, also known as SSC-8 to NATO). In a statement, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that “Russia is solely responsible for the treaty's demise.” Russia has denied the accusations. Trump also said that he has discussed the new nuclear treaty with both Russia and China. He said: "China was very, very excited about talking about it and so was Russia. So I think we'll have a deal at some point."
