US Plans to Revive Arab NATO to Counter Iran's Regional Expansion

  • US and Arab officials have said that the United States is trying to forge a new political and security alliance with 6 Gulf countries in the Middle East along with Jordan and Egypt (dominated by Sunni Muslims) for countering the regional expansion of Iran. The US wants to strengthen the Sunni Muslim allies calling it Arab NATO to challenge Shi’ite Iran. Reports say the cooperation between the US and Arab NATO countries will have deeper cooperation in terms of counter-terrorism, military training, missile defense, diplomatic ties, regional economy. Trump administration is hoping to discuss the Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA) issue at a summit that is provisionally scheduled to take place in Washington on October 12-13, 2018.
