US: Obama grants clemency to 46 drug offenders
July 14 , 2015
President Obama has commuted the sentences of 46 US drug offenders, saying that the inmates were not “hardened criminals” and their sentences did not “fit their crimes.”
The move comes as the Obama administration attempts to reform the country’s criminal justice system.
Of the 46 prisoners, 14 were serving life terms. Most were jailed for offenses linked to crack cocaine. Obama said that America was a nation of “second chances” and these prisoners “deserve their second chance.”
