US: Obama calls for major reforms in criminal justice system
July 15 , 2015
US President Obama has called for major reforms in the country’s criminal justice system that include voting rights for felons and cutting back solitary confinement.
Mandatory minimum sentences, which are lengthy, should be lessened or done away with, the president said, adding that “mass incarceration” made the “entire country worse off.”
Obama said that his administration was in favor of courts that were “tough but fair” and prisons that “seek to prepare returning citizens to get that second chance.”
