US: Nebraska abolishes death penalty as lawmakers override governor's veto
May 28 , 2015
Nebraska has become the latest US state to abolish death penalty after its lawmakers passed a veto-override.
The move was supported by a group of conservatives opposed to capital punishment. The measure was passed 30 to 19 as Governor Pete Ricketts’s veto was overridden.
Besides traditionally conservative Nebraska, 18 American states and the district of Washington DC have banned death penalty.
The last execution in Nebraska took place in 1997.
