US man freed after 30 years on death row

  • Anthony Ray Hinton, a 58-year-old black man from Alabama, has been freed after spending almost three decades on death row in a US prison.

He was convicted in the murder of two restaurant employees in 1985. But following a new trial in 2014, prosecutors dropped the case as tests conducted on bullets discovered at the crime scene failed to establish a link with a gun found at Hinton’s house.

The retrial occurred after the Supreme Court ruled that Hinton lacked proper legal counsel during the first trial.
