US Government Shutdown after Bitter Bickering Between Republicans and Democrats

  • US Senate failed to pass a new budget for preventing a US government shutdown. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called for the vote on Friday and it ended up with 50-49 votes in favor of the bill, falling short of the required 60 votes. Republicans have 51 seats in the Senate and would have required votes of the Democrats to avoid the shutdown. While Republicans stressed upon funding border security, border-wall construction, increased military spending, and immigration reforms, Democrats demanded protection from deportation of over 700,000 undocumented immigrants who entered the USA as children. President Donald Trump accused the Democrats of belittling USA’s military requirements and dangerous southern border concerns. Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer blamed Trump for acting under pressure from the “hard-right forces within the administration”.
