US formally drops Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism
May 30 , 2015
The US has formally dropped Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
The announcement by the State Department, which was on expected lines, marks another symbolic moment in the warming of ties between the two countries and removes a roadblock to restoring full diplomatic relations.
However, the move will not have a major impact on economic sanctions that are part of the embargo imposed on Cuba by the US Congress.
A group of prominent Republicans are opposed to the rapprochement with Cuba and its removal from the terrorist blacklist.
