US Department of Homeland Security to Investigate Death of Migrant Child under Detention

  • The US government has initiated an investigation into the death of a 7-year old migrant girl in the custody of the US Border Patrol. Reports claimed that the Guatemalan child named Jakelin Caal Maquin died out of dehydration while under detention. However, border security officials insisted that the child along with her father (with whom she migrated into the US) had access to enough food and water during detention. The US Department of Homeland Security (US DHS) will reportedly probe into the actual reason for the child’s death. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said that the girl started vomiting while on the bus moving to the nearest Border Patrol Station, 94 miles away from the detention center. A final report will be released by the US watchdog after an investigation.
