US defense secretary Ash Carter makes first visit to Afghanistan
February 21 , 2015
Ash Carter, the new US defense secretary, has said he wants “lasting success” in Afghanistan in his first visit to that country after taking up the post.
He will be meeting US commanders and Afghanistan officials during the unannounced visit.
Though the combat role of foreign troops officially ended in December, the country is still facing a deadly Taliban insurgency, with 2014 being the bloodiest year in Afghanistan since 2001.
US troops are now involved in advisory and training roles.
